SEE THE COURT
Thinking the game involves learning to see the action on the court unfold clearly, almost as if it were in slow motion. This only happens with experience. One young basketball player described the experience like this: âI remember having the sensation that I was on a merry-go-round. The scene was a blur of action. Multi-colored shirts seemed to be rotating around the court and there seemed to be defenders everywhere I looked. Dozens of them at least! Through most of the game my biggest worry was that I would get a pass and dribble to the wrong basket. I kept reminding myself which basket was ours. Ten years later it never occurred to me to think about which basket was ours. If the other team had only four players back on defense, the imbalance would be as obvious as the sofa suddenly missing from your living room. By then, it didnât take counting, but it sure didnât start out that way.â
One football player described the frustration of playing against Joe Montana, who had an uncanny ability to see the field: âHe could read defenses so well, you felt foolish lining up in some disguised coverage. When he took the snap, he seemed to see so clearly what we were doing that it felt just plain stupid to line up away from the positions we needed to be in. We never seemed to fool him at all. It was like he would drop back smiling at us, knowing immediately that we were already scrambling to recover into our designed coverage. Most quarterbacks would get confused and feel rushed by our disguises, but Montana just seemed to be out there playing the game in slow-motion, seeing everything we were doing before we even had a chance to do it.â
Naturally, seeing the court is easier if youâre blessed with good peripheral vision. However, the key to getting the big picture is being able to size up the situation quickly and knowing how to react. That is not something youâre born with. Itâs something you learn.
